Charles R. “Chuck” Garnati, 65, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2017 at 2:10 a.m. surrounded by his loving family at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, MO.

A Rite of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 18, 2017 at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home with Msgr. Ken Schaefer officiating. Burial will follow in San Carlo Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 17, 2017 at Meredith-Waddell Funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial donations made to Williamson County Child Advocacy Center and C. A. S. A.; envelopes will be available at the funeral home, and will be accepted at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home, P. O. Box 2071, Herrin, IL 62948

Chuck was born October 21, 1952 in Herrin, IL to Sam and Helen (Hemlock) Garnati.

Chuck received a B.A. in History and Pre-Law at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He also attended University of Tennessee at Knoxville, TN. He completed his law degree at SIUC.

He was first elected as Williamson County State’s Attorney in 1984 and continued to serve eight consecutive four-year terms. Chuck was the longest continuous serving states attorney in the State of Illinois. He retired on September 8, 2014 having served thirty consecutive years. Chuck built his career being tough on crime. He tried 30 murder cases in thirty years as the county’s top prosecutor, gaining 1st degree murder convictions in 29 of them and manslaughter in the other.

Chuck also initiated programs such as a Domestic Violence Program which provided assistance and advocacy for both adults and juveniles. He also started a bad check program which collected thousands of dollars for the county and businesses.
Advocating for and supporting children was on e of the primary goals for his office. He was a man who gave his life to public service. That service helped him to support two groups he helped create. The Williamson County Child Advocacy Center and C.A.S.A., a court appointed advocacy for children who are abused and neglected. Garnati’s Annual Golf Day Tournament raised large amounts of money for these programs to continue helping children. Brandon Zanotti has continued that tradition with the amount raised approaching a half million dollars.
In addition to supporting the above programs, Chuck donated money and provided support to Williamson County schools for the DARE program, Red Ribbon Week, Project Graduation, Boys and Girls Club and money to area churches for Christmas for needy children. He also contributed money to allow children to go to camps and conferences.
In summary, this man left a legacy of fighting crimes and helping children.

Chuck was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin.

Chuck received awards and accolades which included: HerrinFesta Italiana Lifetime Achievement Award.

His hobbies included traveling, following the St. Louis Cardinals and SIU Salukis and attending concerts and boxing matches.

Chuck was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Garnati.

Chuck is survived by his father, Sam Garnati of Herrin; his sister, Dr. Karla G. Mees and brother-in-law, Dr. Robert L. Mees of Carterville; daughter, Liz Garnati of Carbondale; granddaughter, Kiley Rigdon of Vienna; nephew, R. Scott Mees of Carbondale; and special aunt, Anna Mae Wells of Herrin. He also leaves many loving cousins and special friends.
