Obituary for Harmon Paul Menkis

Harmon Paul Menkis, 78, of Marion, passed away Thursday, March 23, 2017 at his residence.

Paul was employed as a Professor at John A. Logan College for 17 years. He formerly taught at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC, at National Technical Institute for the Deaf and at LaGuardia College in New York City.

Paul was the Chairman for the State of Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission, a Nationally Certified Deaf Interpreter and was a strong advocate for both the Deaf and Interpreter Communities. He always put other people first in his thoughts and actions, and was a generous and loving person.

Paul was a member of the American Sign Language Teacher’s Association, the Conference of Interpreter Trainer’s, and a member of the Herrin Church of Christ.

Paul was born April 21, 1938 in New York, NY to Sidney Menkis and Pauline Ruth (Robinson) Menkis Goggin.

Paul was united in marriage with Merian Janelle Norris on June 24, 1994 at their residence in Marion, IL.

Surviving are his wife of almost 23 years, Janelle Norris of Marion; son and daughter-in-law, Sidney E. and Sherri Menkis of Rockville, MD and their children, Andrew Menkis and wife, Alysha, Brian Menkis and wife Naomi and their son, Cedar, Jonathan Menkis and wife Megan and Joseph Menkis; daughter and son-in-law, Robin D. and Michael Duppstadt of Shanksville, PA and their children, Zachary Duppstadt and wife Allison and their son, Atticus, Benjamin Duppstadt, Katherine Duppstadt; son and daughter-in-law, Mark W. and Nadia Menkis of Gaithersburg, MD and their children, Monica Menkis and Katrina Menkis; step-daughter, Jennifer Watson and Ryan Jeralds of Herrin and children, Taylor, Jordan and Peyton; two step-sons, Lance Watson and fiancé, Tori of Herrin and children, Tristin, Brianna, Bailey, Evan, Emma and Adam (Justine) Doyle of Herrin and their children, Trenton, Brandon and Devin and a brother, John Goggin of Pine, CO.

He was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law and mother-in-law, M. Harrison and Beverly K. Norris.

A time of visitation for family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, March 30, 2017 at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin.
