Obituary for Joe L. Marlo

Joe L. Marlo, Sr., 93, passed away 7:27 a.m. Monday, May 22, 2017 at Parkway Manor in Marion.
Joe was a retired truck driver from Southern Illinois Wholesale in Carterville.
Longtime Herrin Festa Italiana volunteer and one of the early committeemen of the first Herrin Festa Bocce games, Joe Marlo and his wife, Kay were honored as Grand Parade Marshalls for Herrin Festa in 2008.
Joe was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin, Herrin Knights of Columbus Council # 2164; 4th degree Knights of Columbus Council # 195, Du Quoin; the Teamsters Local Union # 347.
He was also a veteran of the U. S. Army during World War II serving in both the European and South Pacific theaters of operations.
Joe was born May 26, 1923 in Herrin, IL to Mario V. and Lena (Gualdoni) Marlo.
Joe was first united in marriage with Ann Powenski on May 11, 1948 in Benton, IL. She preceded him in death on Feb. 6, 1976. He then married Kay J. (Leach) Mascetti on Sept. 10, 1977 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. She preceded him in death on Jan. 6, 2016.
Surviving are a daughter and her long-time companion, Barbara Waterbury and John Payne of Benton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joe, Jr. and June Marlo of Marion and Jim and Janice Marlo of Marion; step daughter and step son-in-law, Karen and Hal McAllister of Brandon, FL; daughter-in-law, Kathy Mascetti of DuQuoin; five grandchildren, Joe Perry (Joy) Marlo of Franklin, TN, Tim Marlo of Marion, Todd (Jessica) Marlo of Marion, Jeffrey (Rebecca) Marlo of Charleston, IL and Lindsay (Adam) Oliveira of Herrin; four step grandchildren, Tara Austin of Tampa, FL, Van Austin of Springfield, IL, Tyler Mascetti of DuQuoin, Chasity (Alex, Sr.) Cruz of DuQuoin; nine great grandchildren, Benjamin Marlo, Charlotte Marlo, Elise Marlo, Zachary Marlo, Rogger Marlo, Shelby Presley, Alex Cruz, Diego Cruz and Kaiden Mascetti.
He was preceded in death by his wives, parents, a sister, Evelyn Creek and step son, Kenny Mascetti.
A memorial mass will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 26, 2017 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin with Monsignor Ken Schaefer officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, May 25, 2017 at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin. A time of visitation for family and friends will also be from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 26, 2017 in the gathering space of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. Interment with military graveside rites conducted by the Herrin American Legion Post # 645, Baker-Ladd V. F. W. Post # 1567 and the IL Army National Guard Honor Detail will be in San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers that memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959 or Hospice of Southern Illinois, 204 Halfway Road, Marion, IL 62959; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
