Obituary for Joe S. James

Joe S. James, 84, of Johnston City, IL, formerly of Villa Grove, IL passed away 4:59 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, 2017 at his residence.

Joe was born December 15, 1932 in Douglas County, IL. A son of Fred and Golden (Lockwood) James.

Joe was a graduate of Villa Grove High School; Eastern Illinois University and Southern Illinois University with further Graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh, Bradley University and Illinois State University. He studied in Mexico through a grant coordinated by Bradley University.

Joe had a 34 year career in Education. He was a Counselor and Vocational Coordinator at Pinckneyville Community High School; he taught Spanish with Teaching post at Illinois Central College, Western Illinois University and Springfield Public School in Springfield, IL.

Joe was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving during the Korean War. He was also proud to have participated in The Honor Flight program (a nationwide network dedicated to providing all veterans who apply a free trip to Washington D.C. to visit memorials honoring their service and sacrifice) with his step-son, David Beasley on the Honor Flight out of Springfield, IL on October 25, 2016.

He was a member of the Methodist Church in Carterville, the American Legion, Carbondale Elks Lodge # 1243 and the Carbondale Eagles Club.

Joe and his wife, Pat, loved to travel and a lot of the travel involved taking cruises. He also loved to read.

Joe married Patricia Beasley on June 12, 2004 in Carterville, IL. She preceded him in death on February 19, 2017.

Joe is survived by his sisters, Violet Burke of Pompano Beach, FL and Yvonne (Jeff) Jackson of Trenton, IL; one nephew and two nieces, Ken (Linda) Hunter of Danville, IL, Dawn Lewis of Perry Hall, MD, Nicole Sheehan of Rose Dale, MD and great nieces and nephews; step children, Teri (Darrell) Erdman of Chagrin Falls, OH, Debra (Ken) Kimball of Waterville, IA, David (Tina) Beasley of Johnston City, IL, Lori (Charley) Glidewell of Carbondale, IL and many step grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents and two sisters, Susan James and Ruth Hunter.

Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin. At 7:00 p.m. the Elk’s 11th Hour Ceremony will be conducted by the Carbondale Elks Lodge # 1243 with Celebration of Life Services following with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating.

Interment with military graveside rites will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at Villa Grove Cemetery in Villa Grove, IL.
