Obituary for Paul E. Winters

Paul E. “Pete” Winters, Sr., 88, of Marion, passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at his residence.

Paul retired from the U. S. Army after 22 years as a Sergeant First Class, serving in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He also worked for Norge Industries in Herrin as a press operator.

Paul and his wife, Karen attended the Pittsburg Freewill Baptist Church and were members of the Arnoldview Baptist Church.

He was a life member of the Williamson County D. A. V. and the Beggs-Gurley V. F. W. Post in Vienna, IL.

Paul was born March 20, 1929 in Whiteash, IL to Alta Winters, Sr. and Maggie (Lisaius) Winters.

Paul was united in marriage with Karen Viernum on November 4, 1976 at the United Methodist Parsonage in Johnston City, IL. She survives of Marion.

Also surviving are his children, Ella Kay (Bill) Gardner of Johnston City, Mary Ann (Freddie) Bain of Johnston City, Connie Sue (Ron) Robinson of Stonefort, Paul E. (Christie) Winters, Jr. of Sidney, Montana, Terri Gail (Rick) Waddell of Alto Pass, John Paul Winters of Carrier Mills; eleven grandchildren including a special granddaughter, Sarah Katelyn Woodworth; numerous great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; sister, Virginia Davies of Bolingbrook and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Alta Winters, Jr., Arlie Winters, Johnnie Winters, two sisters, Helen Harris and Hallie Watkins ; father-in-law and step mother-in-law, Chester Viernum and his wife, Dessie “Marge” Viernum and his mother-in-law, Rose Viernum.

In accordance with Paul wishes, he will be cremated. Memorial Services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, May 1, 2017 at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin with Rev. William Barrett officiating. A time of visitation for family and friends will be from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Following services, interment with military graveside rites will be in Egyptian Memorial Gardens in Energy. Memorial donations are suggested and may be made to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959 and will be accepted at the funeral home.
