Obituary for Richard L. Peterson

Richard Petersen, 84, of Royalton, passed away 3 p.m. Sunday, April 23, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Richard was born August 25, 1932 in Benton County, Iowa to Donald and Emily (Patava) Petersen.

Richard farmed, managed grain elevators, and owned and operated Petersen Grain Hauling. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Shrine Temple in Iowa.

Richard married Maudie Weaver on April 25, 1954 in Vinton, Iowa.

Richard loved spending time with his family and his dog. He was known for his rose and iris gardening. He was also known as a collector and dealer of antiques.

Surviving are his wife of almost 63 years, Maudie L. Petersen of Royalton, IL; three sons, Danny L. Petersen of Eddyville, IA, Dennis Petersen of Centralia, IL, and David R. Petersen of Los Angeles, CA; daughter, Denise Jones of Herrin, IL; six grandchildren, Lisa M. Petersen of Anthon, IA, Richard J. Petersen of Danville, IL, Jennifer & Charles Price of Royalton, IL, Ian M. Petersen of Oskaloosa, IA, Ray Jones of Herrin, IL, and Luke Jones of Herrin, IL; two great grandchildren, Taylor Price and Janson Petersen; sister, Carol McGregor of Cedar Rapids, IA; brother-in- law, Ed Walter of Lime Springs, IA; sister-in-law, Rosie Petersen of Wallingford, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, George Petersen; sister, Faye Walter; and brother-in-law, Ken McGregor.

A private family service will be conducted at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin with Msgr. Ken Schaefer officiating. Richard will be interred at Blairsville Cemetery in Blairsville, IL following the service. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, 204 Halfway Road, Marion, IL 62959.
