Obituary for Tommy J Johnson

Tommy Johnson, 55, passed away 1:21 p.m. Thursday, May 25, 2017 at Herrin Hospital in Herrin.
Tommy was employed as the Facilities Manager at the former Herrin Maytag building since 2011 with Phoenix Investors and Construction in Herrin. He previously worked for Colombo Electric in Herrin for 28 years, before they closed in 2009 and for Butler Supply from 2009 – 2011.
Tommy was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin, where he served as a former Eucharistic Minister and member of the Church/School Maintenance Committee. For many years he has helped with renovations and improvements to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School and Church. He also served as athletic director for Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School for three years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council # 2164 in Herrin and the National Electrical Contractors Association.
Tommy loved his family and friends, but he especially loved his son and three grandsons and his feline companion, Bob. He was a 1980 graduate of Herrin High School.
Tommy loved to ride his motorcycle, watching football, an avid Auburn fan, baseball and racing among other sports. He was a jack-of-all trades; he could build and fix anything. He was very curious as a child (taking apart vacuum cleaners, swing-set, etc.) and this continued into adulthood. He was also mesmerized by how things worked.
Tommy was born April 26, 1962 at Doctors Hospital in Carbondale, IL to James Thomas and Gwendolyn Geneva (Rodgers) Johnson, the youngest of three children.
Tommy was united in marriage with Martha Deann Wilburn on September 17, 1988 at Caldwell Baptist Church located in between West Frankfort and Benton.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Johnson of Herrin; son and daughter-in-law, Jordan Lee and Jennifer Marie “Jenny” Johnson of Zeigler; three grandchildren, Andrew Vincent Wayne Johnson, Colt Audie Lee Johnson and Joseph Brady Gene Johnson; his father, James T. Johnson of Herrin; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Terry Johnson of Park City, Garry and Tammy Johnson of Thompsonville; nephew, Noah Summers; two nieces, Tara Johnson and Samantha McLaughlin; two great nephews, James Mattingly and Landyn Bauer and a great niece, Brooklyn Bauer; aunt, Susan Rodgers; several cousins from Arizona and Alabama; god-children, Seth and Keelie Gass; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Paul Wilburn and Bernice Mitchell of West Frankfort; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Deborah and Frank Claunch of Carbondale, Roger and Nancy Wilburn of West Frankfort, Cheryl and Jay Arnold of West Frankfort; Ervin Thomas of West Frankfort; nieces and nephew on Martha’s side of the family, Jason Price, Rhiannon (Eric) Wiggins, Carrie Thomas, Bret Thomas, Nathan (Holly) Wilburn, Nick (Kaitlyn) Wilburn, Jonathan (Alicia) Arnold, Maggie Arnold and great nieces and nephews, Carson Price, Hadley Wilburn, Hayden Wilburn and Madison Arnold; and close friends, Frank and Vicki Colombo and the entire Colombo family, Jerry and Tina Gass, Larry and Mandy Dawson and their families.
He was preceded in death by his mother and mother-in-law Martha Jeanette Wilburn; sister-in-law, Paula Thomas; grandparents, Thomas A. and Elizabeth Johnson and Frances and Eldred L. Rodgers; uncle, Samuel Rodgers; two aunts, Cheryl Crawford and Frances Klatt, cousin, Eric E. Crawford and Elizabeth Brucker (Terry’s fiancé’ who passed prior to their marriage).
The Rite of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 1, 2017 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin with Monsignor Ken Schaefer officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin and from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the church. Interment will be in San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin. Memorial donations are the preferred form of remembrance, is memorial donations made to the OLMC New School Fund or to the family.
