Obituary for Wilma Jean Hopkins

Wilma Jean Hopkins, 85, of Herrin, formerly of Harrisburg, passed away 6:07 a.m. Monday, March 20, 2017 at the Herrin Hospital.

Wilma was a retired Special Education Teacher, having formerly taught in Witt, IL, Mt. Vernon, IL and in Arizona. After retiring from public education, she taught for Vision Quest, a program for inner city youth.

She was a member of the Dorrisville Baptist Church in Harrisburg, which she was very active in Sunday School and volunteered at the church, she especially enjoyed folding the church bulletins for Sunday services with the other ladies of the church.

Wilma was born September 30, 1931 in Herrin, IL to William Hobert and Dessie Lillian (Odum) Covington.

Wilma was united in marriage with Leland Hopkins on May 5, 1950 in Herrin, IL. He preceded her in death on Nov. 1, 1968.

Surviving are, two daughters and sons-in-law, Leanne and Tom DeNeal of Harrisburg, Carol and Bill Wood of Snowflake, AZ; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Mary Hopkins of Goreville; five grandchildren, Donald Wood, Jessica (Brian) Orr, Jen DeNeal, Andrea (Chris) Fielding and Amy DeNeal; two great grandchildren, Angel and Sierra with another great grandchild due shortly; sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Jim Thompson of Herrin; brother and sister-in-law, Randall and Diane Covington of St. Louis, MO; sister-in-law, Jerry Covington of Herrin and several nieces and nephews including, Nina Covington, Ronda Smith and Bob Magee.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leland; Parents; three sisters, Marilyn Peck, Janet Rentfro, Blanche Magee and two brothers, Paul Covington and Coy Covington.

Services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin with Bro. Dewayne Taylor and Bro. Terry Griffith officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the service at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at Herrin City Cemetery in Herrin.
