Jon Robert Nelson, Sr., 59, of Herrin, died 7:10 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at the V. A. Medical Center in Marion.
In accordance with Jon's wishes, he will be cremated. Private family services will be held at a later date.
Mr. Nelson was a retired Master Sergeant with the MO Air National Guard and the Zeigler Coal Company and formerly worked at Maytag in Herrin.
He was of the protestant faith, a member of the UMWA and a veteran of the U. S. Navy during the Vietnam era.
He was born January 18, 1950 in Herrin, IL to Ernest Alfred and Vida Dorothy (Nealson) Nelson.
He was united in marriage with Phyllis Ann Crowell on August 3, 1995 in Herrin, IL.
Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Nelson of Herrin; son, Jon Robert Nelson, Jr. of Makanda; daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Mike Overby of Fort Wayne, IN; three stepdaughters and step sons-in-law, Monica and John Hawk of New York, Melody and Kenny Knusta of Herrin, Mendy and Damon Collins of Marion; ten grandchildren, Austin Nelson, Jacob Overby, Nathan Gaddis, Wren Gaddis, Brianna Gaddis, Kelsey Collins, Dylan Collins, Chase Knusta, Rianna Knusta and Trent Knusta; mother, Vida D. Nelson of Phoenix, AZ; two brothers, Jim Nelson of Phoenix, AZ, Mike Nelson of Honolulu, HI: one niece, Karen Nelson of Florida and special friends that were always there for them, Leon and Lori Followell of Herrin
He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.
