Guy R. King, 72, of Herrin, passed away 9:10 a.m. Sunday, June 7, 2009 at his residence surrounded by his loving wife and family.
Services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin with Dr. Jerry Ford officiating. Entombment with military graveside rites conducted by the Herrin American Legion and V. F. W. Posts and the Scott Air Force Base Honor Guard Flag Presenters will be in East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Herrin. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at the funeral home. Masonic services will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The preferred form of remembrance is memorial donations made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
He retired from Ashland Oil Company in 1995 after twenty-four years as terminal manager. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman.
He was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Herrin. He was honorably discharged in 1959 from the United States Air Force after serving in Korea and Turkey with the rank of Airman 1st Class. He received a 'Good Conduct Medal' from the Air Force while serving. He was commissioned a 'Kentucky Colonel' in 1982 by Kentucky Governor John Y. Brown. He received the 'Royal Lyon Distinguished Service Award' for outstanding community involvement in Lyon County, KY in 1995. He was a thirty-second degree mason in Lodge # 190 in Kuttawa, KY.
He was born March 15, 1937 in Parkin, AR to Carroll and Ora Lee (Roberts) King.
Guy married his high school sweetheart, Joy Rainey on December 24, 1955 in Memphis, TN and she survives.
Also leaving to treasure his memories are his children and grandchildren. Son, Lonnie King and wife, Teresa, daughter, Cheryl Ramsey and husband, Steve. Grandsons, Nick Ramsey and wife, Haley, Tyler Ramsey and wife, Mallory and granddaughter, Chelsey King. He also leaves a brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Wendel King of Olive Branch, MS and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Winford Rainey of Olive Branch, MS, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one granddaughter, Amanda Ramsey, one brother, Roland King and one sister, Janet Adams.
Thank you to Hospice of Southern Illinois for all the tender, loving care. God sent an angel into our lives at this time, Debbie Bird, an employee of Hospice. We will forever be grateful to her and may God bless her and all the staff of Hospice.
