Mildred Reed Garrett, 95, of Energy, died at her home in Energy on Wednesday, August 26, 2009.
Services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 29, 2009 at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin. Rev. Donald Grammer will officiate. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The preferred form of remembrance is memorial donations made to the First Baptist Church of Herrin or to Hospice of Southern Illinois; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Mildred took great pride in being a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother and considered this to be her life's work. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Herrin and attended faithfully until a few weeks before her death. She played the piano in her Sunday School department when a broken hip in 2007 forced her to give up that activity. She also taught Sunday School for many years.
Mrs. Garrett was born October 4, 1913 at Crenshaw Crossing in Williamson County, IL, the only child of Rick and Alma (Skaggs) Reed.
On February 18, 1933, she married Irvin Garrett in Johnston City, IL. He preceded her in death in December of 1994, from this union, they had two children, Helen Childers of Energy and Herman Garrett, who passed away in 1979.
Mildred leaves her daughter, Helen Childers of Energy; daughter-in-law, Judy Garrett of Energy; five grandchildren, Greg Childers of Orient, Marc and Patti Garrett of rural Marion, Marci and Bill Boudet of Murphysboro, John and Gail Garrett of Escondido, CA and Becki and Mike Arnold of Marion. She also leaves seven great-grandchildren, Chad Childers, Abby Faulkenberry, Jesse Boudet, Chelsea Garrett, Wade Garrett, Gabe Garrett, Samuel Arnold and Addison Arnold as well as four great-great grandchildren, Lane and Landon Childers and Eli and Jaxton Faulkenberry.
She was preceded in death by her husband, son, Herman Garrett, parents and one great granddaughter, Heather Childers.
