Carol Jean (Stewart) Smith, 67, of Herrin, IL passed away 11:25 a.m. Sunday, December 27, 2009 at the Herrin Hospital.
Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Virden, IL with Rev. Ken Macken will officiate. Interment will follow committal services. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009 at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin.
Mrs. Smith retired as a counselor for the State of Illinois, formerly working for the Unemployment Office in Marion, IL and for the Dept. of Corrections at the Illinois Youth Center in Harrisburg, IL.
Mrs. Smith was born August 11, 1942 in Waggoner, IL to Henry and Ruth (Bethard) Stewart.
Surviving are, two sons and a daughter-in-law, Darren D. Lindsay of Herrin, Todd and Lisa Lindsay of Herrin; five grandchildren, Amber (Anthony) Wemmer of Herrin, Aaron Lindsay of Herrin, Kelsey Lindsay of Herrin, Amanda Henke of Des Moines, IA and Kyndal Lindsay of Des Moines, IA; one great granddaughter, Grace Wemmer; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Betty Stewart of Springfield, MO, Mary and Delbert Hasler of Springfield, MO, Lois Guthals of Farmersville, IL; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Denny and Sandy Stewart of Litchfield, IL, Rick Stewart of Carlinville, IL; sister-in-law, Sandy Duff of Carlinville, IL and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Judy Lee, two brothers, Jerry and Max Stewart, one niece, Tina Drake and one nephew, Andy Leach.
