Robert Wayne 'Bob' Starnes, 82, of Herrin, passed away 8:58 p.m. Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at the Herrin Hospital with his loving family at his side.
A Funeral Mass will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 4, 2010 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. Monsignor Ken Schaefer will officiate. Interment with military graveside rites conducted by the Herrin American Legion and V. F. W. Posts and the IL National Guard Honor Detail will be in San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, January 3, 2010 at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin. The preferred form of remembrance is memorial donations to San Carlo Cemetery or the OLMC / St. Mary's Education Foundation or to a charity of the donor's choice.
Mr. Starnes was a retired letter carrier from the Herrin Post Office, retiring in 1982 after 35 years of employment.
He was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin, a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post# 645, Baker-Ladd V. F. W. Post# 1567 in Herrin and was a veteran of the U. S. Navy during World War II aboard the fleet tanker U. S. S. Cabrera in the Atlantic and Pacific.
He was also a member of the Shawnee Amateur Radio Assn. (SARA). He was a ham radio operator for many years with the call letters W9PQB and earned a Commercial Pilots License, but had been unable to fly since 1974 due to a serious accident.
He was born May 10, 1927 in Royalton, IL to Ferrell and Ruth (Smith) Starnes.
Bob was united in marriage with Clemy Fasani on November 19, 1949 and together they shared 60 years of marriage.
Surviving are his wife, Clemy Starnes of Herrin; two children, Jim and Jan Starnes of Herrin; nephews and nieces, Jerry and Nancy (Smith) Starnes of Carterville; Linda (Starnes) and Don Gass of Orient; Donna (Starnes) and Roy Cole of Herrin; Michael and Sheryl (Sears) Starnes of Energy; Patricia Starnes of Herrin; Judy (Starnes) Gordon, Vicki Starnes, and Greg Starnes, all of Minooka; and a sister-in-law, Mary Starnes of Energy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother Alberta (Newcom) Starnes and brothers Allen Starnes of Minooka and Bill Starnes of Energy.
