Dominick R. Monchino, 90, of Herrin, passed away 10:47 p.m. Sunday, January 10, 2010 at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, MO.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 15, 2010 at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin. Monsignor Ken Schaefer will officiate. Interment with military graveside rites will be conducted by the Herrin American Legion Post # 645, Baker-Ladd V. F. W. Post # 1567 and the IL Army National Guard Honor Detail will be in East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Herrin. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 14, 2010 at the funeral home.
Mr. Monchino was a retired self employed landscaper.
He was of the Catholic faith and a decorated veteran of the U. S. Army during World War II, serving with the 100th Division as a Staff Sergeant. He was wounded in action on Dec. 23, 1944 in France and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star medals. He was a life member of the D.A.V. and the V. F. W. Post # 1567, a member of the American Legion in Cresskill, NJ
He was born June 1, 1919 in West New York, NJ to Peter and Michilina (DeMeo) Monchino.
Dominick was united in marriage with Gloria Lear on September 16, 1945 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in West New York, NJ. She is surviving of Herrin.
Also surviving are, two sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Cindy Monchino of Newburgh, NY, Mike and Donna Monchino of Herrin; five grandchildren, Nicole (James) Farrell of Fosterdale, NY, Khristin (Tom) Canavan of Gardiner, NY, Matt (Nicole) Monchino of Herrin, Jason Monchino and his fiance', Erin O'Brien of Herrin, Mike Monchino of Herrin; seven great grandchildren, Douglas Farrell, Kelsey Farrell, Lindsey Canavan, Carley Canavan, Kaylee Canavan, John Canavan and Madison Monchino; and a sister and brother-in-law, Theresa and Tony DeDio of Little Ferry, NJ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Anna Rossi, Mary Procaccini, Jennie Monchino and one brother, Nicholas Monchino.
