Joseph I. Orford, 89, of Herrin, passed away 5:55 p.m. Thursday, March 4, 2010 at the Herrin Hospital.
A funeral mass will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 8, 2010 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin with Monsignor Ken Schaefer officiating. Interment will be in Herrin City Cemetery in Herrin. A prayer service will be held 5:00 p.m. Sunday, March 7, 2010 with visitation following until 8:00 p.m. at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin. The preferred form of remembrance is memorial donations made to St. Mary's Education Foundation; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Mr. Orford was the retired Director of the Franklin-Williamson Workshop in the Ordill area and the West Frankfort, IL offices. He formerly worked for the Kankakee County Training Center in Bradley, IL, the IL Dept. of Public Aid in Anna and formerly served as a Roman Catholic Priest for 19 years.
He attended the St. Nazianz Seminary in St. Nazianz, WI, Catholic University of America in Washington, DC and SIU at Carbondale, where he received his Masters Degree in Rehabilitation. After graduation, He worked for the Franklin-Williamson Mental Health Dept.
He was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin.
Joe was born July 28, 1920 in Chicago, IL to Andrew and Alice (Andrews) Orford.
Joe was united in marriage with Dorothy Ruth Childers on August 31, 1968 in Rock Island, IL.
Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Dorothy R. Childers of Herrin; sister, Sister Mary Martin dePorres of the Congregation of St. Agnes in Fond du Lac, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Sister Lucy Orford, Sister Mel Orford,, three infant sisters and one infant brother.
